چکیده

We obtained X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 in March 1995 using the Japanese X-ray satellite ASCA. Simultaneous far-UV observations were obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on the Astro-2 shuttle mission. The ASCA spectrum shows a lightly absorbed power law of energy index 0.78. The low energy absorbing column is significantly less than previously seen. Prominent O vii and O viii absorption edges are visible, but, consistent with the much lower total absorbing column, no Fe K absorption edge is detectable. A weak, narrow Fe Kα emission line from cold material is present as well as a broad Fe Kα line. These features are similar to those reported in other Seyfert 1 galaxies. A single warm absorber model provides only an imperfect description of the low energy absorption. In addition to a highly ionized absorber with ionization parameter U = 1.66 and a total column density of 1.4 × 10 cm, adding a lower ionization absorber with U = 0.32 and a total column of 6.9 × 10 cm significantly improves the fit. The contribution of resonant line scattering to our warm absorber models limits the Doppler parameter to < 160 km s at 90% confidence. Turbulence at the sound speed of the photoionized gas provides the best fit. None of the warm absorber models fit to the X-ray spectrum can match the observed equivalent widths of all the UV absorption lines. Accounting for the X-ray and UV absorption simultaneously requires an absorbing region with a broad range of ionization parameters and column densities. X-ray spectroscopy of Seyfert 1 galaxies often reveal absorption edges resulting from photoionized gas along the line-of-sight to the central engine, the so-called warm absorber. I discuss how recent ASCA observations of warm absorber variability in MCG−6-30-15 can lead us to reject a one-zone model and, instead, have suggested a multi-zone warm absorber. The evidence for dust within the warm a...

RXTE/ASM observations of PSR B1259−63 near the 1997 periastron passage find no emission brighter than ∼10 times that detected by ASCA during the 1994 periastron encounter, demonstrating that the pulsar is unlikely to have undergone even brief episodes of accretion.

The observations and interpretation of broad iron lines in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies are reviewed. The line profiles observed from MCG–6-30-15 and NGC 3516 show extended red wings to the line explained by large gravitational red-shifts. The results are consistent with the emission expected from an X-ray irradiated flat accretion disc orbiting very close to a black hole. Results fr...

The amplification of the protogalaxy candidate cB58 due to gravitational lensing by the foreground cluster of galaxies MS1512.4+3647 is quantified based on recent ROSAT and ASCA X-ray observations. It is found that the amplification is at most 25 for any reasonable cosmological model with or without cosmological constant. It is also argued that the system may be used to place new constraints on...
